End of the age of the web is nowhere in sight

The shift from open web to closed platforms like facebook and mobile apps might suggest coming end of the open web, but I don't think such prediction is justified.

Benchmark Internet speed in a moving train

Mobile networks are wildly different from fixed line networks. No mobile network is perfect. Marketing talk and coverage maps just create an optimistic illusion around mediocre products. Only field benchmarks can accurately describe every network. Benchmarking mobile networks is quite tricky though.

American software and services I want to get rid of

I knew it all that time. Everyone knew it. First it was ECHELON, then Windows backdoors, buildup of communication capacity used for intelligence, Debian RNG bug, and now Snowden's NSA story. It was so easy to forget about it and just go on with one's life.

Why buying better hardware doesn't help anymore

If you are in military, slow software can cost you life (target selected, wait, applying updates...). If you work at hospital, slow software will inevitably kill some patients. If you run a business, slow software can eat all your profit and send you to bankruptcy.

Backup linux server to Windows client

This is another one that should be quick and easy. It's not. I've tried a lot of backup and syncing software. Most of it simply doesn't work or it doesn't even have that feature. I ended up with something that works even though it's not perfect.

Fastest way to upload files to a web server

Time is money. While uploading files via FTP tunneled through a VPN from a restricted set of clients is super secure, it doesn't do any good to my ability to get my huge backlog of stuff published. I need something faster.
